Drastic Change To Navy Firearms Training

Firearms training is reaching the next level for the U.S. Navy.

A tool labeled the Weapons Augmented Reality Scoring System, or WARSS, has been developed by the Naval Surface Warfare Center to help facilitate training new gunners for the Navy fleet.

WARSS imposes computer generated targets on the view of real .50 caliber M2 weapons.

The system is being praised for being able to teach sailors in real-world settings as opposed to the kind of air-conditioned training that takes place in simulator facilities. It also offers a more immersive and interactive experience than shooting a “killer tomato” target at sea.
