The Step Mexico Refuses To Take

With reports that another colossal caravan is assembling, President Donald Trump has warned that he is prepared to shut down the U.S.-Mexico border. That is unless Mexico makes a bigger effort to stem the flow of illegal immigrants it allows to pass through the country to the U.S. simply because the claim to seek asylum.

Trump called out Mexico on Twitter, claiming that the country was not employing its own strong immigration laws.

Unfortunately Mexico’s Secretary of Government, Sanchez Cordero, stated that while the country intends to “regulate and provide security to migrants from Central America,” he added that its government is “not repressive,” implying it would not deny people from crossing Mexican borders.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador also didn’t seem to weight the gravity of Trump’s threat, responding that “we’re not going to argue” while wanting to maintain good relations with the United States.

Shutting down the border would have severe economic drawbacks for both Mexico and the United States, but if a solution can’t be found to stop the flow of migrants it may be the only option.
